Having been in the business for over 20 years, Fates Warning have enjoyed a reputation as one of the true pioneers of progressive metal. Having sold over a million albums worldwide, the band have influenced other key progressive metal bands on their way up such as Dream Theater and Queensryche. Their latest DVD release, “Live in Athens” is a 90 minute concert recording from the band’s February 2005 European tour and includes a host of bonus material for fans.

Formed in Connecticut back in 1983, Fates Warning started life as a traditional heavy metal band with the release of their debut album “Night On Bröcken”. It was with their next album “The Spectre Within”, however that guitarist Jim Matheos and band mates moved towards more complex arrangements. By 1986, the band had truly become a progressive metal band with their album “Awaken The Guardian”. It was at this stage that they began to influence other fledgling acts such as Queensryche and Dream Theater. Fates Warning have continued to evolve in this genre right up to the present with their current studio album “FWX”.

Having endured a few line-up changes, Fates Warning consists today of founding member guitarist Jim Matheos, vocalist Ray Adler and bassist Joey Vera. The trio went on tour in Europe with prominent support at the beginning of 2005 and performed a cross-section of songs from their ten studio albums released to date. Joining them on tour to augment the line up was Spock‘s Beard drummer Nick D’Virgilio, keyboardist Kevin Moore (OSI, formerly with Dream Theater) and guitarist Frank Aresti.

“Live in Athens” documents a complete gig from February 20th at the Gagarin venue in Athens. The bonus material features behind the scenes footage from rehearsals and soundchecks, plus two clips from Bulgarian television and the tracks “Another Perfect Day” and “The Eleventh Hour”, recorded at the Headway festival in the Netherlands with special guest Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) on drums.
