The bonds of disparate elements yield friction, energy, and ultimately incite creation. It happens throughout all of existence—especially in music. The music of Dream Theater relies on the interplay and brotherhood of the musicians as much as it does on the harmony of the instruments. In fact, the chemistry the band unlocked upon forming in 1985 remains central to the music they create today. The progressive metal pioneers—James LaBrie (Vocals), John Petrucci (Guitars), Jordan Rudess (Keyboards), John Myung (Bass), and Mike Mangini (Drums)— share a unique bond with one of the most passionate fan bases around the globe as evidenced by their two GRAMMY® Award nominations and 15 million records sold worldwide.

Among numerous accolades, 1992’s Images & Words received a gold certification and landed on Rolling Stone’s coveted “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All-Time.” Meanwhile, Guitar World placed Awake at #1 on “Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994.” Excerpts of 1996’s A Change of Seasons notably soundtracked NBC’s coverage of Downhill Skiing at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Fans voted the 1999 Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory the “Number One All- Time Progressive Rock Album” in a 2012 Rolling Stone poll. Not to mention, it ranked as the “15th Greatest Concept Album” by Classic Rock; the anniversary of its release becoming a catalyst for 2019/2020’s The Distance Over Time Tour: Celebrating 20 Years of Scenes From a Memory which saw the inimitable quintet embarking on a global trek, penultimately culminating in February, 2020 with the recording of two shows at London’s historic Eventim Apollo theater, “revisiting and presenting one of the most beloved albums in our catalogue, we couldn’t be more excited to share this release with all of you,” remarks founding member and guitarist, John Petrucci.

In addition to releasing three platinum videos and two gold videos, the group would be inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2010. On its 14th full-length and first release for InsideOutMusic / Sony Music, Distance Over Time, the band recharged the brotherhood that has kept them creating music together for over 30 years.

With every reason to smile, the five musicians immediately locked into a groove and identified a collective vision. They upheld the hallmarks of their signature sound combining metallic aggression and progressive scope, but within the framework of tighter songwriting.

In the end, the union between Dream Theater stands at its strongest on Distance Over Time—as does the music. Selections from 2019’s Distance Over Time, in concert with the full and complete performance of 1999’s Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory created one of the most anticipated and historic evenings in Dream Theater history, ultimately becoming the instant classic, Distant Memories – Live in London. The entirety of the band’s The Distance Over Time Tour: Celebrating 20 Years of Scenes From a Memory is a testament to their fans’ long-term appreciation and love for the band as the members themselves recount, expressing that the “tour has been really incredible for all of us in so many ways. We have been supporting our latest work which has been embraced by DT fans all around the world in a way that we are incredibly grateful for, and the two nights we recorded and filmed in London were definitely amongst the best shows of the tour.” Petrucci continues, “Whether you had a chance to see this tour in person and want to relive what was hopefully an awesome concert experience, or are enjoying the performance on video for the first time, Distant Memories very accurately and very beautifully captures the energy and excitement we all felt together at the Apollo this past February.” He progresses, highlighting the “incredible touring and production crew, along with our amazing film crew, all of whom have really delivered the goods and made it possible for us to be presented in our best light. We are beyond proud to offer this release with brilliant sound, visuals and artistic presentation, thanks to our talented mix engineer, director, visual artist and art director who we all value beyond words.”

Reflecting passionately yet looking excitedly toward the band’s future, Petrucci affirms, “We are very hopeful for what lies ahead, welcoming all of the creative possibilities that await us as we continue on our musical journey.” With such optimistic enthusiasm, one can only just begin to imagine the incredible opportunities and feats of accomplishment that lie ahead for Dream Theater.
